I am a student that is not supported by his family. In fact I work part time during the semester to be able to pay my rent and expenses. During my first to years of university I have also worked during holidays in bars and restaurants. A friend of mine talked to me about a job working in Ferries to France. My French is not bad but isn’t perfect at all. I think I still have a lot to learn. I only know some French because I studied it as an optional course to earn some credit during first year. It was stressful enough to have to work part time and study so I chose French because I have a taste for languages and it wasn’t going to be difficult at all to pass the module. My friend told me than in Ferries to France most people speak English so I didn’t need to worry about my French level.
I accepted the job and went to Paris to board the ship. The ship was huge. I was really impressed because I had never been on a ship before. As soon as I entered I was very excited. The ship had everything, even a movie theatre. I was fascinated.
I have always worked in customer service in restaurants and bars. So it wasn’t a problem for me to be a waiter. People were really nice and polite. On top if my salary I got to keep all the tips that customers left to me. This was great because I managed to save a lot of money in order to allow myself not to work during the last 4 months of my degree. The last part at university is the hardest because you have to present a project that takes months to do. I don’t know if would had made it if I had to work during that period.
After being a waiter in the main restaurant of the ship my boss asked me to replace a barman that was ill. I did it so well that I was asked to stayed in that section. I instantly agreed because the atmosphere was amazing. There were parties all nights and young people from different parts of the world were there. I met a lot of people and even flirted with some girls that didn’t even speak good English. It was really funny. On my free days I got to mix with the guests and use the pool and other facilities. It was the best job ever.
